Results are in: What is Hollywood’s Greatest Car Chase?

Hagerty recently asked: What are Hollywood ’s greatest car chases? With nearly 2,000 votes, the results are finally in! We found America ’s love affair with cars is still going strong, especially when it comes to the silver screen and a sweet classic burning rubber. The results show what car buffs love to see in their movies.

An overwhelming 40 percent said they loved the action-packed car chase through the streets of San Francisco in a sweet 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback driven by Steve McQueen in Bullitt (pictured here). When it comes to extreme intensity and impact, Bullitt still holds the place of the best high-octane thriller to ever hit the big screen, beating out the No. 2 pick by a five-to-one margin.

With over 93 cars wrecked in one scene, Gone in 60 Seconds is easily America ’s number two pick. The flick drew in nearly 8 percent of the votes. Gone in 60 Seconds is filled with action and thrills with a full-throttle chase in a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT500, Eleanor, driven by Nicolas Cage. Many folks might not know that 11 “Eleanors” were actually used in making the film.

Film buffs also got their fix with car chases by Burt Reynolds in his black ’77 Pontiac Trans-Am in Smokey and the Bandit, and Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s police chase in The Blues Brothers, which came in closely at third and fourth places, respectively. Finishing off the list of the top 10 best car chases in moviedom include the 1974 version of Gone in 60 Seconds,  Ronin and The Italian Job.

There were a good number of pollsters who went outside the box to add their own great car chase, including: Vanishing Point; It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; The Seven-Ups; Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry; Gumball Rally; Live and Die in L.A.; and Thunder Road.

And a couple of people even sought out his or her favorites outside of the car market: the boat chase in Live and Let Die and from a tractor point of view:

“When Arnold the pig chases Oliver down the road in his Hoyt-Clagwell tractor (Green Acres). I wanted to vote for the Hoyt Clagwell tractor last year. I’ve owned more than a few Hoyt Clagwells.”

We think that says it all on chases – car or otherwise.
